DEGREE COURSE IN NATURAL SCIENCES INTERNSHIP AND THESIS
Internship
The student is required to acquire specific professional skills through the mandatory internship activity. To this activity he/she will have to dedicate 150 hours (6 credits) in one or more periods of practical training to be carried out, at his/her choice and subject to the availability of the Host Structure, at institutes, departments or university research centres, laboratories or public or private bodies, studios professionals, companies or industries, in Italy or abroad. In each phase of the internship the student works under the direct control of a tutor from the host structure (company tutor) and a teacher-tutor belonging to the CCL (scientific tutor).
The training internship
The internship activity (6 CFU) is a training and research activity that can be carried out both within UNIMORE (internal internship) and at external bodies with an agreement or with which to start an agreement (external internship). If you are interested in carrying out an internal internship, then you can directly contact the professor of the course who carries out the research activity you have chosen. Once your availability has been ascertained, you will develop a research project together which you can also implement during the development of your degree thesis. If you are interested in an external internship you must first contact the internal contact person of the Degree Course for internships (Prof. Chiara Fioroni, internships in the geological-naturalistic field; Prof. Antonio Todaro, internships in the biological-naturalistic field). The contact person, based on your interests, will be able to give you suggestions for identifying both the host structure among the external bodies already affiliated with UNIMORE (or new body), and the scientific tutor (within the Degree Course). Subsequently, the scientific tutor will contact the company tutor to set the objectives and type of internship activities and together they will draw up the internship project (implementation methods and objectives).
PLEASE NOTE: all this does not mean that you cannot propose your own internship ideas and/or contact companies/institutions of interest to you in advance, but only that you cannot independently decide where to carry out the internship without telling us. For example, let's say you are interested in learning more about a certain environmental issue relating to the area in which you live and that you know of an organisation/company that deals with it; you are free to contact the organisation/company and ask if they can host interns and ask what activities they offer. However, before telling the institution/company that you accept a certain activity you must contact the contacts indicated above who will be able to tell you if there is anyone among the teachers who can assist you in the activity itself and, above all, if the activity is consistent with the educational objectives of the Degree Course. If and only if these requirements exist, the company will be officially contacted (by us) and an agreement will be drawn up (it takes 30 days on average) after which you can start the internship activity. Also consider that it may be possible for you to find a tutor within the Degree Course willing to follow you for an external internship activity, but not to combine it with a degree thesis. This remains your choice. If necessary, you will be able to carry out the internship in the chosen organisation/company, but you will then have to complete a thesis on other topics.
Boot mode. Without prejudice to what was said in the previous paragraph, from 2 October 2017, the procedures for starting the internship are managed through the Internship Platform. You can find all the necessary information on the website of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences.
Timings. The internship (internal or external) is usually carried out in the third year of the course, possibly concentrating the activities outside the lesson period; furthermore, barring justified exceptions, the internship cannot be started if at least 90 credits have not been obtained. It is also important not to forget that: i) if you intend to carry out an external internship, in the absence of agreements already in place, at least 30 days are needed to activate them; ii) the 150 hours into which the internship is divided should be spread over a time frame compatible with the objectives set; ii) the internship activity must end at least one month before the expected graduation date to allow registration.
Recognition of the activity carried out. The intern is obliged to regularly fill out the time sheet which he can collect from the internship office when submitting the request. The time sheet must be approved, stamped and signed by the manager of the host facility and delivered strictly at least 21 days before the expected date for graduation. Anyone requiring further information and clarifications (technical/administrative) can contact the Department's Teaching Coordination (didattica.chimgeo@unimore.it).
Thesis
To obtain a degree in Natural Sciences, the presentation and discussion of a report is required which will focus on a project, normally including an experimental and laboratory part, developed under the supervision of a supervisor. Theses of a bibliographic nature are also admitted. The thesis, upon request of the student, can also be related to internal or external internship activities. The final exam involves the presentation of the research paper to the Graduation Commission during the public Graduation exam session. The Department will provide a computer and projector for audio/video, without prejudice to the possibility of using other means produced by the graduating student (e.g. thematic maps, models, etc.). The time available for the presentation is 15 minutes including any questions from the commission (it is therefore advisable to prepare a presentation lasting approximately 11-12 minutes). The judging commissions for the final exam are appointed by the Director of the DSCG and, as a rule, also include the thesis supervisor(s). The methods and criteria for the final evaluation take into account the student's entire career (consult the study course regulations in this regard). The thesis can be written both in Italian and in English. In the second case, an extended summary of the work of the activity carried out in Italian must also be prepared. If you need further information or technical clarifications on how to prepare the presentation, we invite you to consult with your rapporteur and/or co-supervisor.
MASTER'S DEGREE COURSE IN TEACHING AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
INTERNSHIP AND THESIS
Apprenticeship
What is a training internship. Within the activities useful for entering the world of work, the LM-60 TEACHING AND COMMUNICATION OF SCIENCE requires the carrying out of an external internship (6 CFU, 150 hours according to the current teaching offer) which can be carried out, for example, at a school, a communication/dissemination centre, a research organisation/centre, public or private companies responsible for environmental monitoring, etc.
It is not required to obtain a minimum number of credits to be able to start the internship activity which, however, must be in close synergy with the final exam (degree thesis). Internships are activated by signing an agreement between the University and the external host organisation.
A training and orientation project prepared by the promoting body and indicating: objectives and methods of carrying out the internship must be attached to the agreement; names of the tutors appointed by the promoter (organizational tutor and scientific tutor) and of the company manager; the duration and period of completion of the internship.
The coherence of the external internship project is verified and followed over time by a tutor who guarantees the congruity of the activity carried out with the graduate's training project. Internship Projects are also subject to the approval of the Interclass Council. We remind you that for the LM in Teaching and Communication of Science the internship is exclusively external and to contact the relevant teachers to orient you among the various areas:
Prof. Luca RIGAMONTI (tirocini in ambito scienze della natura)
Prof. Roberto GUIDETTI (tirocini in ambito didattico)
Prof. Massimo BERNARDI (tirocini in ambito comunicazione)
Also consult the page relating to the Steering Committee to find out about some of the bodies where it is possible to carry out the internship.
Thesis
The procedures for carrying out the final test and its evaluation are defined in detail by the Teaching Regulations of the study course. The final exam involves the drafting of a written paper, also in English, and its presentation before a Commission appointed by the Director of the Department.
The topic of the dissertation is closely linked to the project developed during the internship activity. The degree exam involves the presentation of the work carried out in sessions open to the public.
The presentation is followed by a discussion during which the commissioners ask questions relating to the presentation. The Commission evaluates the contents and scientific methodology of the paper, the ability to present it, the correctness and relevance of the answers and, on the basis of this, assigns a score which together with the weighted average of the marks acquired by the student and a stable reward from the Teaching Regulations on the basis of the student's entire career contributes to determining the final grade. T
he final exam grade is expressed in one hundred and tenths. For further information on degree theses you can contact the relevant teachers:

Prof. Massimo BERNARDI (internships in communications)
