Sedimentary rocks demonstrate that a deep ocean covered a large part of the Earth dating as far back as 3,800 Ma. The chemical evolution of that ocean, up until today, has been of great interest to geologists and we are now able to trace a general framework for the changes that have taken place through that long time interval. Additionally it has become possible to identify some of the causes for those variations so that we can use them to unravel a clearer history of our planet.
